Resume Format for Freshers (2026): Indian Format, Word & PDF Download

A simple, ATS-friendly resume format for Indian freshers, with a free Word and PDF template, a filled sample, the sections to include, and mistakes to avoid.

Short answer: a fresher resume should be one page, single column, in this order: contact details, a two-line headline and summary, education, projects, internships or training, skills, and certifications or achievements. Use plain section headings, a standard font, and save it as a text-based PDF so applicant tracking systems (ATS) on Naukri, company career sites, and campus portals can read it.

The rest of this guide explains each section, what recruiters look for as a fresher, and the mistakes that get fresher resumes filtered out.

Why the format matters more for freshers

With little or no work history, a recruiter has to judge you on education, projects, and skills. Those are exactly the sections that get scrambled by fancy templates: skill bars, two-column layouts, icons, and tables. If screening software can't read your projects, you have nothing left to show.

A simple format also helps with volume. Campus drives and entry-level roles get many applications, and recruiters skim. A predictable layout lets them find your degree, CGPA, and best project in a few seconds.

The fresher resume format, section by section

1. Contact details

Put these at the top of the page as plain text, not inside a header or footer:

  • Full name
  • Phone number with +91
  • Professional email address (avoid nicknames)
  • City, state
  • LinkedIn URL and, for tech roles, GitHub or portfolio

Leave out date of birth, father's name, marital status, and a photo unless the application explicitly asks for them.

2. Resume headline and summary

A one-line headline and a two- to three-line summary tell the recruiter what role you are targeting. Freshers often skip this or write something generic like "Seeking a challenging position". Be specific instead:

Computer Science graduate (2026) | Java, Spring Boot, SQL Built a library management system and a REST API for a college fest app. Looking for a backend developer role where I can work on production services.

See our guide to resume headlines and summaries for freshers for more examples by role.

3. Education

For freshers, education goes near the top. Include:

  • Degree and branch, college, university, and graduation year
  • CGPA or percentage (include it if it is 7.0+/70%+ or if the job asks for it)
  • Class 12 and Class 10 board, school, year, and percentage, which many Indian employers and campus drives still ask for
  • Relevant coursework only if it matches the job (for example, Data Structures, DBMS, Operating Systems for software roles)

Use one consistent format for every entry, with month and year.

4. Projects

Projects are the most important section on most fresher resumes, especially for tech, data, and design roles. For each project, write:

  • Project name and the tools you used
  • One line on what it does and who it is for
  • One or two bullets on what you built and a result, even a small one

Weak:

Made an e-commerce website using MERN stack.

Stronger:

ShopLite – e-commerce web app (React, Node.js, MongoDB) Built product search, cart, and Razorpay test-mode checkout; deployed on Render and used by 40 classmates during a college sale event.

Only use numbers you can explain in an interview.

5. Internships, training, and part-time work

Include internships, virtual internships, apprenticeships, freelance work, and part-time jobs. Write them like jobs: title, organisation, dates, and one to three bullets on what you did. Tutoring, event management, and customer-facing part-time roles all count as evidence of communication and responsibility.

6. Skills

Split skills into clear groups so both people and software can read them:

  • Technical: Python, SQL, Excel, Power BI
  • Tools: Git, Jira, Figma
  • Languages: English, Hindi, Telugu

List only skills you can back up. A skill that appears in a project or internship bullet is far more convincing than one that only appears in the list. Don't use rating bars or stars; ATS software can't read them and recruiters don't trust them.

7. Certifications and achievements

Add certifications that match the job (for example, AWS Cloud Practitioner, Google Data Analytics, NPTEL courses), hackathon results, coding contest ranks, scholarships, and positions of responsibility. Keep each to one line.

Indian resume format: what's different

Indian employers, especially for campus and fresher hiring, often expect a few things that international guides leave out:

  • Class 10 and Class 12 marks with board and year, as well as your graduation CGPA or percentage.
  • Languages you speak, which matters for customer-facing and regional roles.
  • Full degree and branch names (for example B.Tech, Electronics and Communication Engineering), since drives filter on eligible branches.

Things that older Indian templates include but you can usually drop: date of birth, father's name, marital status, a photo, and a "Declaration" line at the bottom. Add them only if the employer or application form asks. In our analysis of 12,215 resumes, fewer than 1 in 10 still included a date of birth (India Resume Report 2026).

Formatting rules that keep your resume ATS-friendly

  • One page. Freshers rarely need more.
  • Single column. Two-column templates can merge lines when software reads them.
  • Standard headings: Summary, Education, Projects, Experience, Skills, Certifications.
  • Common fonts such as Calibri, Arial, or Times New Roman at 10–12 pt.
  • No tables, text boxes, icons, or images holding important information.
  • Consistent dates in Mon YYYY format.
  • Save as PDF from Word or Google Docs, not as a scanned image. Check by trying to select text in the PDF.
  • File name: Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf.

Common fresher resume mistakes

  1. An objective statement about yourself instead of a summary of what you offer.
  2. Listing every subject you studied instead of the few that match the job.
  3. Projects with no tools or outcome, just a title.
  4. The same resume for every application. Change the headline, summary, and skills order to match each job description.
  5. Personal details that waste space, such as hobbies unrelated to the job, full address, or a declaration at the bottom.
  6. Spelling mistakes in skill names (for example, "Javascipt" or "Mysql"), which make keyword searches miss you.

Tailor it to each job

Most entry-level job descriptions list the skills they want. Before you apply, compare your resume with the posting and make sure the skills you genuinely have are visible in your summary, projects, and skills section. You can do this in a minute with our free resume vs job description match: paste the job description, upload your PDF, and see which requirements are missing.
