Why Your Canva Resume is Getting Auto-Rejected

The Invisible Resume
When you upload a PDF to an Applicant Tracking System (like Workday, Taleo, or Greenhouse), a human doesn't look at it first. A piece of software called a "Parser" attempts to strip all the text out of the file and insert it into a database profile.
If your resume is heavily designed, the parser fails.
1. Two-Column Layouts Break Reading Order
Parsers read left-to-right, top-to-bottom. If you have your Work Experience on the left and Education on the right, the parser will read straight across the page, combining your job title with your university name. The result is gibberish.
2. Graphics Are Ignored
Did you use a 5-star rating graphic to show you are an "expert" in JavaScript? Parsers cannot read images. When the recruiter searches their database for "JavaScript", your profile will not appear because the word was trapped inside a graphic.
3. Headers and Footers Disappear
Many candidates put their phone number and email address in the document header to save space. Many older ATS systems completely ignore headers and footers. Your resume will upload, but the recruiter won't have any way to contact you.

How to format for success:
- One Column: Stick to a single vertical column.
- Standard Fonts: Use Arial, Calibri, or Garamond. No custom web fonts.
- No Tables or Text Boxes: Use standard tabs and margins to align dates to the right.
- Standard File Formats: Always upload a standard PDF (exported from Word or Google Docs) unless specifically asked for a
.docxfile. Do not upload images (.pngor.jpeg).
