Electrical Engineer Resume Keywords: Maintenance, Design, and PLC
Which keywords belong on an electrical engineer resume in India, and where to put voltage, equipment, PLC, and safety so a screener can find the right profile.
Short answer: state your branch of electrical work in the headline, then put voltage, equipment, and software inside the bullets. "Electrical maintenance of plant equipment" matches almost nobody. "Preventive maintenance of 11 kV HT and LT systems" matches the jobs that ask for it.
Design, maintenance, projects, and automation are hired separately. Keywords from the wrong branch make the resume look unfocused.
Split the keywords by the job you want
Maintenance and utilities
- HT and LT, with the voltage you worked on (for example 11 kV)
- Switchgear, transformers, MCCs, and the rating if you know it (for example a 2 MVA transformer)
- Preventive maintenance, thermography, breakdown attendance
- Electrical safety and permit-to-work
Design
- Load calculation, panel design, cable sizing, Single Line Diagram
- AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP
- The standard you designed to, named in the bullet
Automation
- PLC, with the family you programmed (Siemens S7, Allen-Bradley, Delta)
- SCADA, VFD, commissioning
- The process you automated: utilities, packaging, water treatment
Projects and commissioning
- Erection, testing, commissioning
- Vendor coordination and the equipment you brought online
Pick the column that matches your next job. A maintenance engineer who lists ETAP and MATLAB from college, and never mentions HT, LT, or a transformer, will miss the plant jobs and look thin for design jobs too.
Where each keyword has to appear
A skills line is not enough. Applicant tracking searches, and Naukri keyword search, find words in the whole file, but a recruiter only trusts a word that sits next to work. Use this order:
- Headline: the branch plus two or three specific terms. Example:
Electrical Engineer | HT/LT maintenance, PLC, plant utilities - Summary: years, the kind of plant, and the equipment family
- Bullets: voltage or rating, the action, and a result
- Skills: the same terms again, grouped, so nothing in the list is new
If a keyword is in the skills group and in zero bullets, delete it or write the bullet.
Example bullets
Maintenance:
- Led preventive maintenance for 11 kV HT and LT systems across two plants. Thermography checks cut unplanned electrical downtime by 35% in a year.
- Commissioned a 2 MVA transformer and its switchgear with no safety incident during the shutdown.
Automation, only if this is your work:
- Troubleshot Siemens S7 PLC logic for utility systems and updated the SCADA screens the shift team uses.
Design, only if this is your work:
- Prepared load calculations and panel GA drawings in AutoCAD Electrical for a new packaging line.
The downtime figure is part of the example. Use your plant's number, or describe the check you added if you were not given a before-and-after.
Before and after
Before: Handled electrical maintenance in the plant.
After: Led preventive maintenance for 11 kV HT and LT systems across two plants. Thermography-based checks cut unplanned electrical downtime by 35% in a year.
The second line can be found by someone searching for HT, LT, or preventive maintenance. The first line cannot.
Skills group for a maintenance profile
- Electrical: HT/LT systems, switchgear, transformers, preventive maintenance, electrical safety
- Automation: Siemens S7 PLC, SCADA, AutoCAD Electrical
Keep design tools off this list unless a bullet shows a drawing or a study you completed. The same rule is in skills for a fresher resume: a skill you cannot demonstrate is a liability in the interview, not a keyword win.
Freshers
Campus electrical resumes get generic fast. Make the training and the final-year project specific:
- In-plant training: the equipment you saw tested or maintained, and the weeks you were there
- Project: the machine or simulation, and the software (MATLAB, ETAP, AutoCAD)
- Any safety course or licence, with the year
Do not title yourself "Electrical design engineer" off a semester of AutoCAD if your training was on the shop floor. The headline should match the bullets.
Format
One column, real text, contact details in the body, dates with month and year. Drawing-heavy resumes exported as images fail the text layer test: if you cannot highlight a sentence, neither can a parser. Details are in what an ATS score measures and formatting mistakes.
Check the keywords against your file
Upload the resume to the electrical engineer ATS checker. It looks for the branch (design, maintenance, or automation), equipment and voltage, and whether safety or uptime shows up in a bullet rather than only in the skills list.
