Resume for TCS, Infosys and Wipro: Format, Keywords and Mistakes (2026)

How to write a resume for TCS, Infosys, Wipro and other IT services companies, for freshers applying through campus or off-campus drives and experienced candidates applying laterally.

Short answer: IT services companies such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech, Cognizant and Accenture hire in large volumes, so your resume is usually screened quickly against clear criteria: degree and year, academic percentages, skills matching the role, and (for experienced hires) the exact technologies and domains in the job posting. Use a one-page, single-column resume with your academic record near the top if you are a fresher, and name technologies exactly as the job description does if you are experienced.

How hiring works at IT services companies

Freshers are mostly hired through:

  • Campus drives run through your college placement cell.
  • Off-campus national hiring tests, such as the TCS National Qualifier Test (NQT) and Wipro's Elite National Talent Hunt, and company-specific programmes and coding contests at Infosys and others. Names, eligibility, and formats change from year to year, so always check the company's official careers site.

For these, the test decides most of the shortlisting, but your resume is still read in the interview and checked against eligibility criteria.

Experienced candidates apply to specific requisitions through the company careers site, job portals like Naukri, or consultants. Here the resume is the main screen, and recruiters search for exact skills, years of experience, notice period, and location.

What recruiters and interviewers check first

  • Degree, branch, and graduation year, which must match the drive's eligibility.
  • Academic percentages: Class 10, Class 12, and graduation. Many drives set minimum cut-offs, so state each one clearly.
  • Backlogs and education gaps: be accurate. Mismatches with your application form cause problems at document verification.
  • Programming basics: at least one language (Java, Python, C++) and fundamentals such as OOP, DBMS, and SQL.
  • Projects and internships you can explain confidently in the technical interview.

Recommended order

  1. Contact details
  2. Headline and 2–3 line summary
  3. Education (with Class 10 and 12)
  4. Technical skills
  5. Projects
  6. Internships and training
  7. Certifications and achievements

Projects: what interviewers ask about

Technical interviews at service companies often start from your resume. For each project, be ready to explain:

  • The problem and who it was for
  • Your part, if it was a team project
  • The technology stack and why you chose it
  • One challenge and how you solved it

So only list projects you actually built and understand. Two well-understood projects beat five you can't discuss.

Example fresher summary

B.Tech ECE (2026) graduate with 78% aggregate, skilled in Java, SQL, and basic web development. Built a hostel complaint-tracking web app used by 300 students. Looking for a Systems Engineer / Graduate Trainee role.

More examples by role are in our resume summary for freshers guide.

Experienced (lateral) resume for IT services

Match the requisition exactly

Lateral roles are usually tied to a specific project, and recruiters search for exact technologies. If the job description says "Java 17, Spring Boot, Microservices, Kafka, AWS", those words should appear in your summary and in the bullets where you used them.

Show client, domain, and delivery

Services companies value:

  • Client domain: banking, insurance, retail, telecom, healthcare
  • Project type: development, support, migration, testing, implementation
  • Team and delivery context: onsite–offshore coordination, Agile ceremonies, SLAs
  • Certifications that match the account: AWS, Azure, Salesforce, SAP, ServiceNow, ISTQB, PMP

Write bullets like:

Built 3 Spring Boot microservices for a US insurance client's claims platform, handling ~15k requests a day; reduced batch processing time from 4 hours to 25 minutes.

You don't have to name the client if your contract prevents it; describe it as "a US insurance client" or "a Tier-1 Indian bank".

State notice period and location

Recruiters at service companies filter heavily on notice period, current location, and willingness to relocate. Include them in your application or cover note, and answer screening questions consistently with your resume.

Moving from a service company to a product company

If you are applying from TCS, Infosys, or Wipro to a product company or startup:

  • Lead with what you built, not the client or ticket volume.
  • Quantify impact in product terms: latency, users, uptime, cost, revenue.
  • Show ownership: design decisions, features owned end to end, production incidents handled.
  • Add side projects or open source if your project work was mostly support or maintenance.
  • Prepare for DSA and system design interviews, which product companies weight heavily.

Common mistakes

  1. Two-page resumes for freshers. One page is enough.
  2. Percentages missing or inconsistent with your application form.
  3. Skills you can't answer questions on, especially languages listed only to fill space.
  4. A generic objective ("to work in a reputed organisation") instead of a specific summary.
  5. Photos, tables, and multi-column templates that break parsing on careers portals.
  6. Not tailoring for lateral roles. The same resume for every requisition misses the exact skills recruiters search for.
