How to Put a Family Business on Your Resume

Short answer: if you worked in the business, list the trade name, the role you actually did, and the months you did it. "Helped in family business" is not a job. "Billing executive, Sharma Traders, Jun 2022 to Apr 2024" is, when billing was the work.

People search "can I put family business on resume", "working in family business on resume", and "family business resume sample". You can. The resume fails when the title is bigger than the work, or the dates cover years you were only visiting.

What counts as a job

Put it in Experience when you had a regular role: set hours or a set responsibility, for long enough that you can describe a normal week. Payroll is not required. Many family firms never put children on the rolls. The test is the work.

You closed the books, filed GST, ran the counter, bought stock, or supervised a shift. That is Experience.
You designed the Instagram page or built a billing sheet, and that was the whole contribution. Put that under Projects with the dates, unless you also did the day-to-day job.
You joined for a festival week or a college vacation and did not run anything. Leave it off, or one line under the degree if a form asks about gaps. It is not a two-year role.

How to write the entry

Use the name on the GST certificate or the shop board, the city, and your real function.

Billing and stock, Sharma Traders (family firm, hardware), Indore Jun 2022 to Apr 2024

Raised GST invoices and followed vendor payments for a retail hardware shop.
Reconciled the daily cash and two bank accounts in Tally.
Tracked fast-moving SKUs and placed repeat orders with three suppliers.

The words in brackets, "family firm", save you from an interviewer who finds out mid-call. Use them once, on the company line. The bullets stay about the work.

Title yourself with the function. Proprietor, partner, or director only if that is how the firm is registered and you can show it. A son who billed invoices is not a director because his father owns the shop.

Part time during college

Overlapping dates are fine when both were true.

Say part time on the entry if you were in class on weekdays. A full-time title through the same months as a full-time degree makes the verifier call the college and the shop. If the shop was full time and the degree was correspondence, say that in the education line.

Sample lines by kind of business

Swap in your firm. Keep a bullet only if you did that task.

Retail or wholesale

Handled counter billing and returns for a garment shop doing walk-in sales.
Counted stock every month and listed items to reorder.

Small factory or workshop

Recorded daily production and dispatched orders for a packaging unit.
Followed up with two transporters on delayed consignments.

Professional firm (CA, advocate, clinic) owned by a parent

Scheduled patients and maintained files at a dental clinic.
Do not list audit opinions or legal advice you were not allowed to sign.

You only did the accounts, nothing else

Filed monthly GST returns for the family firm from Apr 2023 to Mar 2025.
That can be a part-time accounts entry. It should not become "managed finance".

Numbers belong in the bullet when they are yours: invoices a day, SKUs, or the returns you filed. Skip the family's turnover unless you were the person who prepared that figure and you are allowed to share it.

What gets caught

A company name that does not match the GST name or the signboard.
A salary figure you were never paid.
"Team of 20" when the shop was you and one helper.
Software you did not use. If the books were on paper, write paper. Tally on the skills list with paper books in the only job is a mismatch. Software filters for accounting roles are listed on the accountant resume checker.

Where it sits on the page

Experience, in date order, with the rest of your jobs. One column, month and year on both ends. If this is your only work, it leads. The headline is still the job you want next, not the shop: "Accounts executive | Tally, GST, bank reconciliation" when that is the work you can repeat for an employer. Check the dates

Upload the resume to the ATS resume checker and read the jobs it extracts. The firm name, the city, and the months should be the ones you will repeat on the form and in the call.
